WORK PACKAGE 1 OVERVIEW
This package will focus on a desk based study appraising BIM software applications, BIM technology trends, Irish best practice BIM case studies and a global review of BIM adoption in international regions.
1A) GLOBAL BIM STUDY
This will involve a systematic review of BIM adoption in international regions with particular focus on the enablers to support national implementation programmes. Countries will be reviewed to establish why BIM was suggested as a more rewarding construction methodology and how each International Government engaged with stakeholders to roll out its BIM roadmap. Further reference will be made to the development of contracts and standards, education initiatives, deployment of pathfinders projects, application of maturity tools and how BIM strategies have been sustained.
1B) IRISH BIM STUDY
Conduct a comprehensive literature review of BIM adoption in Ireland and, in particular, the operational challenges experienced in the delivery of BIM projects in Ireland. This will involve a desk top study in the form of a literature review and will be informed from the findings of work package 1A. Ireland will be reviewed in accordance with key enablers established from work package 1A with particular focus on how Ireland has reacted to these enablers. Current engagement with professional bodies and government, as well as a systematic review of the current legal landscape will also be reviewed.
1C) IRISH BIM CASE STUDIES
A number of case studies will be used to identify and capture best practice effecting of BIM on Irish projects in the Irish and international markets. Observational data, where permitted, will be collected in the form of the model and a review of existing BIM processes. This review will encompass collaboration, specific savings or efficiencies gained through BIM, specific values added to the project through BIM, novel approaches to education, lessons learned, how BIM contributed to reducing the risks for the project participants, etc.
1D) DIGITAL TRANSITION SURVEY
This sub work package is intended to evaluate attitudes towards Digital Transition which will enable an understanding of operational challenges associated with company adoption. This will be a high level survey aimed at influential leaders in architecture, engineering and construction contracting which were selected with the co-operation of industry representative bodies. Industry leaders from both private and public sector organisations operating in the construction sector will be nominated, so this will enable a direct comparison of BIM maturity between the two sectors.
